The Art of Wishes

The Art of Wishes is a charitable initiative that brings the international art community together to raise funds for Make-A-Wish UK. Driven by the vision of its Founder, Batia Ofer, the Art of Wishes engages a wide network of artists, collectors, galleries and institutions to host events, commission new works and raise awareness, with the sole aim of granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
Collectively raising more than £8.3 million to date, each of these events have taken place at the start of the world-renowned Frieze Fair in London, with Frieze very generously supporting the events by providing guests in attendance with VIP access to their exclusive previews.
The Art of Wishes is unique in that it brings together the art world and wishes to raise life-changing funds for Make-A-Wish UK. In addition to traditional live and silent auctions, The Art of Wishes Gala Dinners have astounded guests and the art world alike with a unique art auction featuring works donated by established and emerging contemporary artists. Each artist was asked to create or donate a piece of work inspired by the wishes of the seriously ill children Make-A-Wish work with.

The Art of Wishes 2021

The Art of Wishes 2021

The Art of Wishes 2021 marked a long-awaited return to events for both the Art of Wishes and Make-A-Wish UK. It proved to be a spectacular evening celebrating the collaboration of artworld and life-changing wishes.

On the evening of 11th October, 400 prominent guests were welcomed to The Natural History Museum by host, David Walliams OBE. Guests were seated to the tune of The Ember Trio and there was an exclusive performance by the cast of the hit West End musical The Lion King.

Following the keen eye of its founder and patrons, the auction was carefully curated with a finger on the pulse of the modern art world. Instead of solely listing classic works by established names, Batia Ofer used this landmark event to provide a platform to champion emerging talent and underrepresented artists. The artworks selected also aimed to reflect the changing landscape of the artworld, with the 2021 auction hosting the Art of Wishes’ first collectible NFT artwork.

The evening went on to surpass all expectations, becoming Make-A-Wish UK's biggest ever fundraiser and raising an astounding £3.5 million on the night, which will grant around 1,600 wishes to children with critical conditions.

Thank you to all those who made this possible.

The Impact

63,000 children in the UK have been diagnosed with a critical illness changing their lives and the lives of their families forever, bringing the joy of childhood to an abrupt end with treatment plans, hospital visits and sleepless nights taking over.

The power of a wish revives a childhood stolen by critical illness. It brings light and joy to children and their loved ones, with a profound and lasting impact on all their lives.

But Make-A-Wish UK can't be that light for everyone. Getting a wish takes an army of volunteers, community support, skills and donations to help those children feel like children again.

That is why The Art of Wishes exists. Together, we have the power to light up the darkness

Wish child, Riley meeting astronaut Tim Peake

"I wish to be a spaceman and meet Time Peake"
Riley, 5, VACTERL

For five-year-old Riley, his wish wasn’t just meeting an astronaut, it was a day that he can look back on to rocket him far, far away from hospitals and treatment whenever he needs it.

Mum, Rachel, said: “You truly have made a little boy’s life better. He suffers from anxiety and has so much going on, it’s something we can reflect on when he’s having a panic attack. We’ll keep it with us for the rest of our lives.”
